Karen Chen sees the natural world as a rhythm of vitality and tranquility which is the essence of her art.  Nature is her favorite subject. Her paintings always reflect the harmony of mankind and nature, simplicity, tranquility and peacefulness.  Most of her paintings are symbolic. She uses symbolic lines and dots, the basis of Chinese painting, to give visual expression of the tranquility and vitality of the nature, and the movement, the feelings of freedom and the joy of life of living subjects such as fish, shrimp, butterfly, flowers and bamboo.  In her landscapes, she combines abstract art with realism.  Trees, rocks, waterfall symbolize the real world while the clouds, mists and distant mountains that separate these motifs lead one's mind to an imagined world - a spiritual sphere. She has studied under several renowned masters;  thence she is able to blend the elaborate brushwork, the splash-ink technique, the Lingnan School and the Hsiech-i style (writing the meaning) to develop her own unique style.

Her works are in collections worldwide.  She has conducted numerous workshops and taught Chinese painting course at various colleges.
